Little research has been done to assess the health literacy and communication issues of African immigrant populations, who are often just lumped in with African Americans
African Americans and African immigrants experience different communication challenges in the U.S. Health Care system
Many African immigrants do not understand how ideas of race and discrimination are embedded in the U.S. health care system and do not recognize these kinds of slights/difficulties for what they are until they have gained more experience in the U.S. health care system
After coming to the U.S., African immigrants health worsens over time along with succeeding generations
It can be difficult for African immigrants to navigate a healthcare system culturally different than their own
Many African Americans rightfully approach the U.S. health care system with a lot of distrust due to historical injustices

Pearson 2008
It is widely accepted that SES has a robust relationship to health outcomes, but this is actually based on studies of White men that have been generalized to all populations
Other racial groups do follow the same SES=health trends as White men, but these results are viewed as "paradoxes" rather than evidence that this theory may be wrong
"Hispanic paradox"
Perhaps the Salmon Bias Theory and the Healthy Migrant Hypothesis are partial explanations for these "paradoxes"?
Other resources not as highly valued in our society, such as familial networks, may be more important for POC health than SES
Many researchers who examine this relationship between SES and heath do so with White populations but fail to note this limitation in their study.

To make SES a more accurate axis of study, we must consider more factors when determining the "formula" for SES
Access to resources, family networks, societal barriers, etc
The kind of health impacted by SES can vary along race, ethnicity, gender, sex, location, etc.
SES more likely to reduce mortality rates than morbidity rates for African Americans, meaning that SES, education, and occupation may have more impact on forestalling death than actually improving health
These SES "paradoxes" help show how race is best conceptualized as a relational characteristic among groups within a social hierarchy
