Effects of COVID-19 on Student's Expectations / Norms of Alcohol & Substance Use
Student Engagement
Robbed of a typical college experience intensifying feelings of isolation
Encouraged more students to consume as a comfortable outlet to pass time, or deal with personal pressures or pressures from the pandemic
Increased consumption, during time of isolation, had a higher likelihood of abuse, as the social aspect was no longer there to regulate
Decreased consumption because social gatherings and events where this behavior was present were no longer occurring
Wanted to make up for lost experiences because the lockdown restrictions and quarantine requirements not only shut down the institution, but it also cut off basic human interactions between students.
Expectations of Greek Life
There was an urge to return to "normalcy" after COVID-19 restrictions were lifted
Increased amount and rate of alcohol and use and consumption
Overwhelming for both students that refrained from consuming and continued consuming during the pandemic because of the unlimited supply and general consensus that it was normal
"Fit in" aspect took place as students returned to campus and wanted to socialize and mingle
ex: pledging for fraternities lead to manipulating other students to consume more
Safety Net for dealing with Anxiety & Depression
FOMO
ex: watching friends gather in small group settings or even go out in another place that is more lenient on lockdown restrictions
Understanding that other college students elsewhere still partied and "had fun" during the pandemic
Being stuck at home during an expected time of freedom/ independence
Self-medicating for these disorders using alcohol and substances could lead to improper use or unhealthy increased in amount and consumption
Greek Life Dynamics
Fraternities act as a hub for providing alcohol and substances to students, especially to females
Stereotype 2: Women easy to take advantage of when intoxicated with perception altering substances
Stereotype 3: Women can put themselves in harm when the peer pressure of others, specifically males, encourage heavy drinking competitions
Stereotype 1: Women have a lower tolerance than most males
