macbeth
characters
Macbeth
Macbeth is a strong warrior who fights bravely in battle. he's ambitious, he wants to become king and is determined to do so. however, he has a conscience and often doubts whether he's doing the right thing. he spends a lot of time feeling guilty. he's easily influenced by others, which means he can be weak. his hamartia is his ambition.
lady macbeth
lady macbeth influences macbeth throughout the play especially at the start. lady macbeth is as ambitious as macbeth and she is willing to do anything to secure her position as queen of scotland.at the start of the play lady macbeth is dominant and confident, an example is when she manipulates macbeth into thinking killing duncan is the best thing to do. after the murder lady macbeth is overwhelmed with guilt, macbeth distances himself from her and she kills herself as she couldn't live with what she had done.
duncan
duncan is the king of scotland at the start of the pay, he is seen as a generous man who rewards loyalty, for example he hands out honours to Macbeth and Malcolm. nobody speaks negatively towards duncan, macbeth says " his virtues will plead like angels". Duncan's flaw is that he's to trusting. he trusts macbeth and doesn't suspect he's plotting to kill him. he even describes the treacherous macbeth as " a gentleman on whom i built an absolute trust". however he can be firm when needed, this is shown when he kills the past thane of cawdor.
banquo
Banquo is a general is Duncan's army and a good friend to Macbeth.
'unsex me here'.
macbeth is described as a tyrant later in the play which juxtaposes the character that the audience are introduced to. macbeths character rules by fear because he could not be on the throne as he has broken the great chain of being.
macbeth is described as brave to highlight that at the beginning at the play he is a good and noble man. this suggests that he fits into the gender stereotype. this makes macbeths downfall even more tragic. his bravery is his harmartia which leads to his downfall.
