Chemical Tests Common Homework
Gas Tests
Oxygen Test
Light a splint then blow it out then put it in a tube of oxygen, once its in there it should relight
Hydrogen Test
Add hydrochloric acid to a tube then place a lit splint in the tube, once its in there it should make a squeaky pop sound
Carbon Dioxide Test
Add limewater to one tube and hydrochloric acid to carbonate in another tube then add a tube to connect both of them, limewater should turn cloudy if exposed to carbon dioxide
Ammonia Test
Insert damp red litmus paper into the gas, if it turns blue ammonia is present
Chlorine Test
Insert damp universal indicator paper into the gas and if it turns red then it bleaches, chlorines is present
Flame Tests
Dip a nichrome wire into hydorchloric acid then put it into the bunsen burner, after that dip it into the hydrochloric acid again, then place it in the compound and put it into the flame
Lithium - Red
Sodium - Orange
Potassium - Lilac
Calcium - Orangey red
Copper - Blueish green
Anion tests
Sulfate anions
Add a few drops of barium chloride then add a few drops of dilute nitric acid. If sulfate is present, a white precipitate will form (of barium sulfate)
Carbonate anions
Add dilute hydrochloric acid to the carbonate and connect it to another tube using a tube containing limewater. If carbonate is present, you will see fizzing in the tube containing the dilute acid and then you will see the limewater turn cloudy
Halide Anions
First add dilute nitric acid then add silver nitrate
Chloride - White precipitate
Bromide - Cream precipitate
Iodide - yellow
Cation Test
Ammonium Cations
Add sodium hydroxide then heat the mixture gently, if it turns purple, ammonia is present
Add water to anyhydrous copper sulfate, if water is present it will tun blue
Add dilute hydrochloric acid then add barium chloride, if sulphate is present, a white precipitate will form
