What role do experts play in influencing our consumption or acquisition of knowledge?
KQ Breakdown
Key terms
Consumption of knowledge: The consumption of knowledge is the way in which knowledge is received and perceived by the knower. The way in which the knower uses the knowledge shows how they are consuming it.
Acquisition of knowledge: The acquisition of knowledge is the way in which a knower obtains certain knowledge. It refers to the way a knower discovers new facts and learns new things.
Experts: An expert is an individual that is very knowledgeable or skilful in a specific area. They have a deep understanding of the topic they are an expert in.
Influence: Influence is the capacity of ability of another individual, in this case an expert, to alter the values, beliefs, and learning of a knower.
Explanation
Explanation: The KQ is asking how experts, or more knowledgeable individuals in a position of higher power, impact the way a knower obtains and perceives knowledge presented to them by said expert. It refers to an expert’s ability to affect a knower’s personal values, beliefs, and understanding regarding a certain topic.
Key Concepts
Objectivity: Objectivity is the lack of bias. In this context, there is some knowledge that can only be viewed objectively, so experts cannot exert much influence. However, people always tend to have an implicit bias.
Perspective: One's perspective is their point of view or attitude regarding certain knowledge. Influence from others can alter preexisting perspectives.
Interpretation: Interpretation refers to the way a knower perceives and reacts to knowledge. Knowers interpret knowledge differently based on how they are obtaining the knowledge, how the knowledge was presented to them, as well as personal values and beliefs. In this case, a knower might interpret knowledge differently due to influence from the expert.
Values: One's values are their set of personal beliefs that determine how they perceive different situations. These values can be manipulated to persuade communities of knowers.
Power: In the hierarchy of this world, there exist various power dynamics. Some individuals or abstract ideas will always have more power, or influence, over others and they may manipulate this power to achieve their desired outcomes. In the context of this KQ, the expert in a certain topic is in a position of power which they may use to influence the way a knower perceives knowledge.
Certainty: Certainty is the conviction that knowledge is true. If knowledge is certain, it is less open to interpretation, so it's more difficult to persuade knowers to believe otherwise.

Justification and persuasion: Since experts are especially knowledgeable in a certain area, they can better justify their stance and use these justifications to convince others to persuade others to think similarly
