As communism collapsed in the rest of Eastern Europe in 1989, the Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic moved away from communism towards an aggressive Serbian nationalism
In 1991 the northern republic of Slovenia declared independence beginning the breakup of Yugoslavia.
There were violent clashes between the two largest republics, Serbia and Croatia
Diplomatic efforts were made by both the EU and UN to come to a peaceful resolution. Britain as a member of both organisations was a part of these efforts, but they failed as it was not clear whether the aim was to hold Yugoslavia together or to break it apart
