        Thatcher was seen as a hero amongst many Eastern European people for ending communism.
        
        German was unified despite Thatcher’s misgivings.
        
        The USSR worked with the USA and Britain when Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990.
- - - - Diplomatic efforts were made by both the EU and UN to come to a peaceful resolution. Britain as a member of both organisations was a part of these efforts, but they failed as it was not clear whether the aim was to hold Yugoslavia together or to break it apart
- - - - But there was no European pressure and the US did not get involved so the violence continued
        
        Eventually the US and NATO were persuaded to intervene. Britain, as an important member of NATO, took part in the airstrikes
        
        This forced the Serb forces to agree to a peace treaty, signed in December 1995 and guaranteed Bosnian independence.
