- - - - Trade Unions continued to be suspicious that women in the workplace would lead to lower wages.
      - The Equal Opportunities Commission only launched 9 investigations between 1976 and 1983.
      - Only 10% of sex discrimination cases in the workplace were successful as discrimination was difficult to prove.
      - Employers got around the Equal Pay Act by making women’s jobs different to men’s so they could not be compared.
      - Women’s wages remained lower than men’s.
- - - - Immigrant communities were underrepresented in politics.
      - The Conservative Party gained in popularity after its leader, Thatcher, announced that a Conservative government would limit immigration.
      - There were examples of violent attacks on immigrants.
      - Black youths felt that they were harassed by the police. This tension led to a riot at the 1976 Notting Hill Carnival
      - Racism was visible at football matches where monkey noises were made up of black players.
      - In popular culture racist jokes were acceptable and white actors ‘blacked up’ in the Black and White Minstrel Show’ until 1978.
