Hydrocephalus - Coggle Diagram
Hydrocephalus
Treatment (Surgical)
Ventriculoatrial (VA) shunt: Transfers cerebrospinal fluid from the cerebral ventricle to the right atrium of the heart (for older children), not for children with cardiac disease.
Ventriperitoneal (VP) shunt: A thin plastic tube is placed to help drain extra cerebrospinal fluid from the brain and is then drained into the peritoneum.
Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy (ETV): Involves creating a small opening in the third ventricle, allowing CSF to flow freely through the previously blocked ventricle.
Labs and Diagnosis
No specific blood tests are included in the workup for hydrocephalus; however, genetic testing may be indicated if hydrocephalus secondary to an X-linked genetic disorder is suspected.
