Who and What Contributed to the outcome of the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting?
The Perpetrator
Adam Lanza
A 20-year-old from Kingston, NH
The Victims
20 children around 6-7 years old, 6 faculty members
Nancy Lanza, Adam's mother, who was shot four times while asleep
Guns Used
Bushmaster AR-15 rifle, a Glock 10mm, and a Big Sauer 9mm
The AR-15 rifle was the main weapon used for the murder of the children but used one of the handguns to take his own life
Adam Lanza used his mother's guns to commit these violent crimes
The School
Adam Lanza attended Sandy Hook Elementary School when he was a child
Adam had shot his way through the front doors of the school. His rampage lasted a total of 11 minutes
Reasonings as to why Adam chose Sandy Hook are unaware, but it is known that he had "scorn for humanity" and also had interest in pedophilia
Mental Health
Was diagnosed with sensory-integration disorder, which included smelling things that were not there, washing his hands excessively, and hypersensitivity to physical touch
Numerous school teachers mentioned the violence that Adam would write about in stories, deeming it "disturbing"
At 13-years-old, Adam was diagnosed with Asperger's but would not accept the diagnosis
Signs of depression began showing in 5th grade when he stated in an attorney report that he did not think highly of himself and that everyone around him deserved better
Once Adam entered middle school, his mental health rapidly decreased but still showed no signs of hurting anyone around him
Life at Home
Family would describe Adam as a "normal little weird kid"
Had a close relationship with his siblings and parents, more specifically, his father
Peter and Nancy Lanza got a divorce in 2001 when Adam was 9-years-old (finalized in 2009)
After the divorce was finalized, Peter and Nancy still maintained a healthy relationship in order to both work with Adam and his needs/issues
Peter had last saw Adam in 2010, after Adam demanded to never see him again
Obtaining the Guns
These guns did not belong to Adam Lanza, but instead were legally obtained and registered by his mother, Nancy Lanza
Guns Laws in CT
Bans were in place for such assault rifles but had expired in 2004
A year after the shooting, CT proposed stricter laws on the already banned assault rifles
Despite these actions, in 2014 it was estimated that between 50,000 and 350,000 assault rifles remained unregistered
Gun Laws in CT are the most restrictive in the country
Universal background checks are now required for the purchase of any firearm in CT
