Networks 3
hardware
routers - responsible for transmitting data between networks.. They direct packet to their destination.
switches - connect devices on a LAN. recieve data from one device and transmit this data to the device on the network with the correct MAC address
WAP - A switch that allows devices to connect wirelessly. Used to set up Wifi networks. Wireless access point
-
Transmission media - A physical connection or an interface between the transmitter and the receiver. The main functionality of the transmission media is to carry the information in the form of bits through LAN(Local Area Network)
-
Coaxial cables - Made of a single copper wire surrounded b a plastic layer for insulation and a metallic mesh which provides shielding from outside interference
Fibre optic cables - Transmit data as light. High performance, don't suffer interference and can transmit data over long distances without the lost of signal quality. (EXPENSIVE)
Virtual network - A virtual network is a network that can securely connect geographically unrelated computers via the internet . Virtual network servers create a network that has no direct physical connection, but one that allows file sharing and communication.
Wireless
Bluetooth
-
Connection range varies, but mobile devices are typically 10 metres
-
used in smartphones, watches, headphones etc
Wi-fi
-
-
-
Often used in routers, desktops, smartphones
-
To connect to a WAP, you need a wireless NIC or a USB dongle
