WC14 - The Role of Carbon
Origins of carbon
primary source is the Earth's interior
Stored in mantle, when the earth was fromed, and escapes at constructive and destructive plate boundaries and hot spot volcanoes
much released from destructive plate boundaries is derived from the metamorphism of carbonate rocks, subducting with the ocean crust
some remains as CO2 in the atmosphere, some dissolved in oceans, some stored in the biomass, some bound to carbonate rocks
removed into long-term storage by burial of sedimentary rock layers and carbonate rocks like limestone
Why is carbon verstile?
It forms more compounds than any other element
Found in all life forms including: sedimentary rocks, coal, diamond, graphite and petroleum
where is carbon found?
CaCO3
Skeletons
Shells
Hydrocarbons

Atmosphere
organic carbon
Found in living organisms (e.g. plants & trees)
Carbon source
A store that releases more carbon than is stores (e.g. power plants )
Carbon sink
A store that absorbs more carbon than it releases (e.g. trees in rainforests)
Inorgainc carbon
Found in non-living things (e.g. ores and minerals)
