Moving Beyond Salmon Bias
Health Is political
This Chapter talks about how scientific studies back up the fact that latinx communities are at a continual disadvantage from policies being created partainint to health concerns. The article claims that the reson these issues are so prevelent with little to no conversation around them is due to the World Health Organizations (WHO) that underminds this group by protraying the message that this demographics health inequalities have already been taken care of; this is not the case.
The conversations that are had about the latinx population and health disparities present themselves in academic settings but instead of talking about how it is actually due to flaws in the system of health policies causing this health crisis but instead argue how the health issues and disparities are seen as outcomes.
What are social determinants of health?
Social determinants of health can be described as economic and social resources made available to people, for example, housing, quality education, jobs that pay at a living wage. Therefore the health of the individual, commujnity and population relys on political legislation.
Thus, the reason that Latinx populations are at risk and suffer from health disparities due to political decisions is because the voice of Latinx populations is muffled as they don't have access to political power.
As laws change concerning mobility, freedom, migration, and Jobs that pay a living wage it puts people in Latinx communities at a disadvantage because there is a lack of Representation and the system that we currently have already predisposes them to experiencing health disparities, even though health has been recognized as a human right
The article talks about how part of the issues around what questions people are asking about these glaring health disparities.
Health Advocacy is incredibly important as well as representation in these political policy decisions otherwise there is legislation made that is supported by racism, classism, xenophobia among other "isms" that place people in the Latinx community at a disadvantage. Health advocosay requires representation.
What is Community Mobilization? It is the process of reaching all parts of a community to make sure that everyone's voice is heard and that way they can be represented. This is paticularly hard with Latinx communities because they dont all share the same religion or political leniance.
What do we do now? The article states that there are too many health disparities within the Latinx communities to receive Health equity. The first steps to take, however, is advocacy and representation.
The article opens by sharing that despite having lower levels of education and less access to health recourses Mexican immigrant's have reported better health out comes than US born citizens.
What is Salmon Bias? Salmon bias is the bias where the United States will not want unhealthy immigrants to move into the country so they "throw back" the people that arent healthy. Exsalmon bias will occur if less-successful migrants,
who also happen to be less healthy, subsequently engage in return migration..
Methods of Return? Migrants who live in the United States are less likely to go to see physicians on US soil however they will migrate back toomexico in order to receive universal health care . Along with things like Employment incentives and family reunification.
This is a unique study that looks into male mexican migrants and researchers were able to take information from two information services to track to number of people who migrate back to mexico while tracking their health status.
3 Goals of the study: 1) evidence of health- related migration from mexican men. 2) Population of health Mexicain migrants that remain in the US 3) and the health of the returning migrants at time of transit
It has been observed that foreign- born individuals who reside in the US are more likely to: eat more fruits and vegetables, not b e overweight, not smoke or have alcohol abuse issues and appear to have better self- related health than their native born US counterparts.
The Healthy Migrant Hypothesis
Immigrants exhibit better health
than those who remain in their country of origin.
. In 2005, U.S. immigration officials forcibly removed nearly 208,100 individuals, 70 % of whom were mexican- origin. Reports indicated that thisnjumber more than doubled, to reach 438,421 removals in 2013.

Salmon Bias
I have never heard of the Salmon Bias before reading this article and I think that it is extremely interesting because I didn't realize there was a term for a system of racism and ableism to be supported and continue to thrive.
This article goes into detail about how people in the Latinx communities are being severely under represented in political policy decisions.
This directly impacts the way that people are being treated at the most basic level, access to health care. I thought that this article and the information brought up about how intertwined the world of politics is with the health world.
Having this entanglement of policy vs. equity impacts the Latinx community extremely hard. This is because the latinx community ranges in religion and political leanings so that impacts how they get political representation and still doesn't include everyone.
The study concept was really interesting to me looking deeply into two different information sources to gather the data for the paper and they found that those who were deported against their will were more likely to suffer from mental or physical illness.
