B.2 Motivation
Goal orientation theory
Refers to an athlete's reasons for engaging in various achievement behaviours in a particular situation
Reasons may be to learn (a mastery orientation), to do better than others (a performance approach orientation) or to avoid failure (a performance-avoidance orientation)
While a combination of mastery and performance goals may be ideal for learning and achievement, the mastery goal orientation is preferred
Typically associated with more desirable outcomes such as high engagement, intrinsic motivation and persistence

Intrinsic motivation refers to engagement in an activity with no reason other than enjoyment and satisfaction to engagement itself
Extrinsic motivation refers to engagement that provides means to ends that go beyond the engagement itself

Attribution theory is the study of how individuals explain events that take place in their lives.
Knowing learners’ attributional beliefs can help a coach to address the value of effort.
