CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE MOVEMENT
CAUSES
NEHRU'S REPORT
The Nehru's report declared that the immediate objective of India should be the attainment of Dominion Status
The Congress in its 1928 session at Kolkata declared that it would resolve to a non-cooperation campaign if the Nehru's report was not accepted by 31st December,1929
REACTON AGAINST SIMON COMMISSION AND ANGER BORN OUT OF LALA LAJPAT RAI'S DEATH
Fatal blows were inflicted on Lala Lajpat Rai by a British sergeant when he was a demonstration against the Simon Commission on 30th October,1928. He died on 17th November,1928.
All the members of the Simon Commission were Britishers and the council said that the Viceroy's Executive Council could not be made responsible to the Central Legislature

THE DANDI MARCH
reached Dandi on 5th April,1930
on the morning of 6th April,1930, Gandhi picked up salt left by the sea - waves and violated the salt laws
followed by 78 members initially
this was a signal to disobey the laws of the Government
Gandhi had selected the salt-laws as his target fully knowing well that the salt tax affected all sections of the society, especially the poor
on 12th March,1930 Gandhi started the historic march from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi, a coastal village in Gujrat
SUSPENSION - GANDHI-IRWIN PACT
Gandhi along with the members of the Congress Working Committee were released on 26th Janurary,1931..
the pact was signed on 5th March,1931
GANDHI'S DEMANDS
give back the congressmen their confiscated properties
permit peaceful picketing of liquor shops and foreign cloth shops
release all the political prisoners(only those not guilty of violence were released)
permit people living near the seashore to manufacture salt
IRWIN'S DEMANDS
suspend the civil disobedience movement
to attend the Second Round Table Conference
THE SECOND ROUND TABLE CONFERENCE
-was a failure because: - the question of independence or of setting up a responsible government receded into the background. - most of the time was devoted to the communal question and the representation of the minorities in the legislatures(central and provinces)
SIGNIFCANCE
had a health effect on the lives of the oppressed
women came out in large numbers
govt. was convinced that bold constitutional reforms were now required
Gandhi's preaching of on-violence had a healthy impact on the minds of the youth
caused a tide of patriotic fervour in the country
The moment was renewed in 19322 as the Viceroy did not agree to meet Gandhi
Dominion - a Self-Governing country which was a part of the British Commonwealth (e.g.- Canada)
