My child who has cancer is not getting the mental health support that they need.
We have not been able to access mental health services while in hospital
Hospital staff (doctors and nurses) have not told me about any available.
Because the mental health staff are very busy & prioritize those with greatest need
Because there are not enough mental health service workers
Because there is not enough funding for mental health
Because the mental health staff in oncology do not have strong connections with the psychology department at BC Childrens
Because this is a siloed system and oncology us often considered to be separate.
I don't know to ask about services.
Because it is stressful and challenging to navigate the healthcare system and I am emotionally drained
Because all aspects of my life have changed to care for my child.
Hospital mental health services are not listed online.
We have not been able to access mental health services since being discharged from hospital
Mental health services offered in hospital don't seem to be available once my child is not in active treatment
Psychologists have limited capacity and there are only 2 so they need to dedicate their time to those in active treatment. Child life staff work with inpatients.
There is a lack of funding and continuity of care
I have to make assumptions about what is possible because it is hard to find the correct information
I can't afford them
My private insurance does not cover enough of the costs.
private providers are most accessible and they are very expensive
Mental health services are not adequately funded in our health system
Services available don't seem to be a good fit for my child.
It is difficult to find therapists who are comfortable working with my childMy child wants opportunities to connect with children with similar experiences
They are not able to attend alternative programs that many children have access to like recreation programs
Health and appointment times are unpredictable and it makes it hard to register
Therapy & Recreation programs aren't able to adapt to my child's specific health needs
Training is not adequate for working with children with complex medical diagnoses, grief & trauma
