Who does it affect?
people of different socioeconomic backgrounds can be affected by eating disorders. People with lower incomes may be more likely to suffer from an eating disorder due to lack of access to healthy food, while people with higher incomes may be more likely to suffer due to cultural pressures to be thin.
People with a family history of eating disorders: People with a family history of eating disorders are more likely to develop an eating disorder.
Young women are the most likely to develop an eating disorder, According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, approximately 1 million people in Canada suffer from an eating disorder. Of those, it is estimated that between 10-20% are male, while the remaining 80-90% are female.
People with mental health issues: People with mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, are more likely to develop an eating disorder.
Athletes: Athletes, especially those who participate in sports that emphasize appearance, such as gymnastics, figure skating, and bodybuilding, are more likely to develop body dysmorphia and therefore develop an eating disorder.
