ONE PILLAR PAGODA IN HANOI
HISTORY
A pagoda which is typical for the architecture of buddhism.
This pagoda was built in 1049 by Ly Thai Tong – the second king of Ly dynasty.
Legend has it that in his dream, there was a bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara sitting on a lotus flower, guiding him on it.
A monk adviced him to build a pagoda, the stone pillar and the lotus pond similarly to his dream.
Also, another one was built next to the pagoda in order for the monks to look after it conveniently.
When the French withdrew from Vietnam in 1954, they completely destroyed this structure.
Fortunately, the new one was reconstructed afterwards.
One pillar pagoda is recognized as the most unique architecture pagoda in Asia.
ARCHITECT
One Pillar Pagoda has only a small wooden pagoda located on a large stone pillar placed in the middle of Linh Chieu lake.
The pillars
The pillars of the temple are 2 stone pillars with a diameter of 1.2 meters overlapping each other into an extremely solid block.
The total length excluding the submerged part of the stone pillar is 4 meters.
The top of the pillar is a system of wooden beams with a symmetrical structure, solid to support the Lien Hoa tower above.
Đài Liên Hoa
Đài Liên Hoa is designed with wood in the shape of a square with a length of 3 meters on each side with a large railing surrounding it.
Inside the Lien Hoa station, the altar of the statue of Quan Yin, a thousand-eyed, thousand-armed Buddha is decorated very solemnly and luxuriously.
With a pair of large ceramic water hyacinths, lotus flower vases on both sides, copper incense burners, altar pots and pans, painted gold-plated altars
The roof
The roof of One Pillar Pagoda is covered with red brick, with four corners bent like a knife soaring to the sky.
On the top of the roof is the image of two dragons facing in two directions with their tails touching each other but turning their heads towards the moon in the middle.
"two dragons adoring the moon"
The temple is built on a stone pillar rising above the lake, meaning like a lotus flower rising up out of the water to bloom pure and elegant. Perhaps that's why One Pillar Pagoda is also known as Liên Hoa Đài (lotus station).
