Speech in 1895, "calling for black progression through education and entrepreneurship" not by protesting and challenging laws directly
Poem:
Booker T. Washington was an influential spokesperson
Who worked his way up to pay for his learning
He was the last generation born into slavery
And the first principal of Tuskegee University
He delivered a speech called the Atlanta Address of 1895
Which gave him the fame and support to thrive
He said economic security was better than political power and education
But secretly donated to court challenges against segregation
He pulled lots of strings and made connections
Raised a lot of money, distributing funds for better education
He garnered support of many wealthy entrepreneurs
Such as Carnegie, Rockefeller, and the owner of Sears
He was criticized for his "accommodationist philosophy"
But became the most dominant leader in the African-American community
1880 to 1915 was the Age of Booker T. Washington
And his accomplishments and legacy will not be forgotten
