Quotes/Analysis
Quotes :"Probably armed,Possibly not"-Armitage uses a caesura to introduce internal conflict.Armitage has achieved this through the adverbs "Probably" and "Possibly" which creates a atmosphere of uncertainity if the looter was guilty or not.Potentially,Armitage uses a Caesura to introduce trauma and discomfort when talking about the situation which may show that the soldier was guilty on killing the looter.
"I see every round as it rips through his life"-The writers use of graphic imagery is used to demonstrate the lack of glory or honour in this killing.Armitage uses the verb "rips" to associate with something delicate like paper which may suggest the fragility of life as the looter is killed mercilessly and gruesomely.Perhaps,Armitage uses a strong graphic imagery to perhaps reinforce the brutality of war.
"His bloody life in my bloody hands"-Armitage uses dark imagery as shown in the quote "his bloody life in my bloody hands."The repetition of blood can emphasise the trauma of PTSD.Perhaps Armitage uses a literary allusion to Lady Macbeth's Classic scene of washing the blood from her hands after falling into insanity, this highlights the guilt faced by the soldier as well as how his mind has been corroded by his actions as a soldier even until now.The use of present tense may further highlight how the soldier feels like he is constantly having to relive the moment which allows the reader to empathise with the soldiers suffering due to the selfish nature of war, as he now has to live his life in misery, which for some could be worse than death.
"On another occasion" - the poem begins in media res which serves to confuse the reader as they don't currently understand what is going on. This also mirrors the confusion of the soldiers as they are not emotionally prepared for the event that is about to unfold. This may be purposely done by Armitage to suggest that soldiers are launched into situations they don't fully understand. By opening the poem in media res, it shows the futility and unpredictability of war.

Kamikaze
Quotes/Analysis
"A shaven head" - this represents the lack of individuality of the soldiers and shows how they are controlled by Japan's propaganda and their idea of patriotism. This could also imply that the pilots must sacrifice their life for their country or else they will be seen as shameful to society.
"A tuna, the dark prince, muscular, dangerous." - Imbalance of power between humanity and nature. Even a kamikaze pilot - the epitome of bravery - can sense the danger of it. A pilot (a symbol of military power and determination) is not the most dangerous thing in the poem - a fish is! Metaphor - it is a prince - to show how significant and important the fish is and emphasises how it should deserve honour and respect.
"
"Figure of eight"-this may describe the movement of the flag and also symbolises eternal life which is ironic because it's his eternal life that he will be sacrificing. Nature is infinite compared to the short life of humans, and life is brief, valuable and precious. War and honour will be forgotten, but nature will always remain standing. Symbolises how nature overpowers humanity.
"Pearl-grey pebbles"-Pearl is something precious but pebbles are absolutely worthless. This juxtaposition shows how the pilots life is precious but is being given away as it was worthless.

Quotes/Analysis
"The merciless iced east winds that knive us ..." - owen skillfully describes the wind through the use of personification as the soldiers are trying to cope with the harmful winds. The use of personification suggests that the wind is an aggressor and also it could illustrate the brutality of nature. Owen skillfully uses an elipses to portray the escalating fear and tension the soldiers have as they prepare for another attack.
"poignant misery of dawn" - Owen describes how dawn brings no hope to the suffering soldiers. Owen uses the adjective "Poignant" to evoke the sadness of the soldiers. Paradoxically, dawn is usually associated with refreshness and renewal whereas in this poem it is related to misery which might suggest that dawn only seems to bring more misery and suffering.
"dawn massing in her east melancholy army" - Owen uses personification to foreshadow the conflict that nature is going to bring to the soldiers. Potentially,Owen may be doing this to reinforce the brutality of nature. Owen uses the adjective "Melancholy" to show how it is a process of repititive suffering for the soldiers. This may highlight the futility of war as the soldiers have to endure endless suffering inflicted by nature and die a gruesome death.
"Sudden successive flights of bullets streak the silence." - The sibilance is used here to position the nature as an enemy. The sibilance mirrors the sounds of gunfire which shows to the readers how the snow is the real threat as snowflakes slice through the air in the same way that bullets do. This breaks the silence previously described. It appears that the soldiers were not waiting for a battle with the enemies but instead the nature.
"bullets [were] less deadly than the air." -Owen emphasises how the natural world is the chief enemy of the soldiers.Owen describes how the opposing enemies "bullets {were} less deadly than the air"The use of personification indicates the endless power that nature has and possibly suggests that nature has inflicted deep suffering and pain on the soldiers.Owen may have purposely done this to reiterate the brutality and power of nature.
Bayonet Charge
Quotes/Analysis
"Suddenly he awoke and was running"-Hughes begins In Media Res to suggest that war is like an unatural awakening. This is clearly shown as the writer begins "running"The verb may sugggest that the soldier may be engulfed in fear as we tend to run when we are scared or cautious of a situation.Potentially,it may highlight the futility of war as the soldier is basically running into a death zone with a futile attempt of survival.
"Stumbling across a field of clods towards a green hedge"-Hughes uses present continuos tense to create a sense of immediacy. This is from the use of the verb "Stumbling" which might convey how the soldier is desperate for survival. The lack of movement of the soldier is shown through the use of thick consonance which may show the soldier feels strained and cumbersome. The writer perhaps does this to show how the soldiers has a slim chance of survival.Hughes purposely does this to suggest the brutality of war as the soldier is shown to have a slim chance of survival in the midst of death.Contextually,Hughes' father managed to convey the horrors of war so nakedly that is tortured him.
"Its mouth wide/open silent"-Hughes uses animal imagery to show to the reader the inner terror of the soldier. This is conveyed through the "Yellow hare" as it is being tossed recklessly until it dies a painful death.Hughes potentially does this to foreshadow that the soldier will have a similiar fate.Hughes may be doing this to show to the reader the true realities a soldier faces in the middle of a war and also to depict the brutality of war.
"King, honour, human dignity,etcetera"-Hughes creates a juxtaposition of the patrioric ideals of the soldier to the reality of war.The use of list reveals to the reader that these were indulgences in the first place that inspired him to go to war.Ultimately, they have no bearing compared to the reality of war.Hughes does this to show how the soldier's patriotism has been replaced with disillusion.
