Why did the Greeks win the Persian Wars?
Greek Skill/warfare
Unification of the City States
In the Battle of Platea the Athenians and the Spartans came together in order to fight off the Persians --> This was extremely beneficial as the Spartans had the biggest and most powerful military
Warfare
The Greeks had a big advantage in Naval warfare which was shown in battles such as the Battle of Salamis and the Battle of Mycale where Greek fleets defeated high numbers of Persian ships
The Battles were fought on Greek land so the Greeks had advanced knowledge of the terrain around them which allowed them to know where narrow passes and mountains are such as in the Battle of Thermopylae
Military Skill
The Spartans were highly trained soldiers and used fighting methods such as the phalanx, which was a formation of warriors armed with spears and interlocking shields
Persian leadership
Darius (Darius the Great) was the King of Persia during the First Persian invasion and the leader of the Persian army
His campaign ultimately failed after the Persians lost the Battle of a Marathon
Xerxes was the son and successor of Darius the Great and was the King of the Persian War
He is best known for his successes at Thermopylae, Salamis and Artemisium
Persian mistakes/warfare
Persians often believed that that because they outnumbered the Greeks, they could easily defeat them showing that their cocky attitude was one of their downfalls
'Excessive hubris'
Battle of Marathon
During the Battle of Marathon the Persians made the mistake of not using their cavalry which could possibly be what made them lose the battle
Battle of Thermopylae
During the Battle of Thermopylae the Persians were led into a narrow pass which heavily impacted their warfare methods and their armament was not suited for this
Greek Leadership
Spartan King, Leonidas commanded the Spartan Army
At the Battle of Thermopylae, Leonidas led the Greek forces to take a stand against the Persian invasion but unfortunately he was killed by Xerxes and his army along with 300 other Spartans -->
However they were able to hold them off for multiple days before the Persians broke through the narrow pass
Miltiades
Miltiades was a Greek General who defeated the Persians at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BCE
