ELEMENTS OF A SHORT STORY
Plot
Is how the author arranges to develop the basic idea. Shorts storys usally have one plot.
1) Exposition
Beginning of the story, characters, background, and setting revealed.
2) Rising Action
The conflict is revealed, are events between the the exposition and the climax.
Two types of conlfict:
Internal: struggle within one´s self.
External: struggle with a force outside one´s self.
3) Climax
Turning point of the story
Three-fold phenomenon:
Main character receives new information.
Main character accepts this information.
Main character acts on this information.
4) Falling Action
Resolution begins, events and complications start to fall in place.
5) Resolution
Final outcome of events in the story.
Character
In a fictional story:
Protagonist
Clear center of a story
Antagonist
Opposition or Enemy of the main caracter
Characteristics: of a character can be reviled
His of his fisical appearence
What he says, thinks, feels, dreams, does and does not
What others says about him/her and how others react

Second Person
Story told by a narrator who addresses the reader or some other assumed "You".
Third Person
Story told by a narrator who sees all of the action.
First Person
Story told by the protagonist or a character who interacts closely with the protagonist or other characters.
Omniscient
Knows and sees everything and can move from the characters mind to another.
Limited
Funnels all action through the eyes of a character.
Theme
Central message of the story
Story's tittle also emphasizes
Figures of speech are utilized to highlight the theme
Examples of theme
Things are not always as they appear to be
Love is blind
Believe in yourself
People are afraid of change
Don't judge a book by its cover
Setting
For some stories, the setting is very important, while for others, it is not. When examinating how setting contributes to a story, there are multiple aspects to consider:
Place: Geograpchical location; where is the action of the story taking place?
Weather conditions: Is it rainy, stormy, sunny etc?
Time: Historical period, time of the day, etc; when is the story taking place?
Social conditions: What is the daily life of the character's like? Does the story contain local colour?
Mood or atmosphere: What feeling is created at the beginning of the story?
