irrigation
Definition
To irrigate is to water crops by bringing in water from pipes, canals, sprinklers, or other man-made means, rather than relying on rainfall alone.
scale
Top Countries using irrigation
1 India 715,539 km squared 2020
2 China 690,070 km squared 2012
3 United States 234,782 km squared 2017
4 Pakistan 193,400km squared 2020
5 European Union 154,540 km squared 2011
The two countries with the largest irrigated land area are China and India, which make up 21.3% and 20.6% of worldwide irrigated land area respectively as of 2012
3,242,917 km squared over the whole world
examples
deserts are an excellent example of places that rely on irrigation as they rarely have rain so they have to rely on irrigation to grow crops.
TIme
The earliest known systems of irrigation began in 6000 BC in Egypt and Mesopotamia. In Egypt, the Nile flooded for a few months each year, and the waters were diverted to the fields to allow farmers to grow crops where otherwise they would be unable to do so.
