The Stages of Faith
-
- Mythic - Literal Faith (MLF)
- Age 6-12: they begin to learn about religion from others - like teachers / friends. Begin to understand that others have different beliefs.
- Faith comes from stories told and rituals practiced.
- They take what they are told to be true
-
- More open to others ideas and beliefs - not threatened by them.
- See the importance of their religious community - all on the journey together.
- Early 30s. Some answers have been found & come to realise that all answers are not easy to find. Understand that life is a mystery.
James W. Fowler was an American theologian & minister in the United Methodist Church.
He identified 6 main stages of a person's faith as they go through life.
- Individuative - Reflective Faith (IRF)
- Young adulthood - difficult stage. People begin to question their faith and what they believed before.
- At this stage people can leave their religious community if they cannot find answers to their questions.
- Or they may become more confident in their beliefs
- Universalising Faith (UF)
- Not afraid to stand up for what they believe in - use their faith to see justice in the world.
- Become important religious teachers and can relate to anyone at any stage or of any faith
- Only small number of people reach this stage e.g. Mother Teresa of Calcutta
