Loftus and palmer study details
Research method
weaknesses: Realism of the environment and pp's tasks
Laboratory experiment
Strengths: Consistency of pps - experience is the same, high control of extraneous variables
experimental design
2 lab experiments - independent measures deisgn
Strengths: cost less, take less time
Weaknesses: potential for individual differences as different pp's take part in the different conditions
IV
Experiment 2 - The wording of the critical question in the questionnaire, which verb (hit, collided, contacted, bumped, smashed)
Experiment 1 - The wording of the critical question in the questionnaire, which verb (hit, collided, contacted, bumped, smashed)
DV
Experiment 1 - The estimated speed of the car given by the pp
Experiment 2 - Whether the answer to the question did you see any glass was yes or no
Controls
Experiment 2 - Filter questions, Same time of 1 week between tests, control group of students weren't asked about speed
Experiment 1 - filter questions, same 7 traffic clips, same film slips across all conditions of the IV, same order the clips were presented
Sample
characteristics
Experiment 1 - 45 American students
Experiment 2 - 150 American students
Sample selection
method
Opportunity sampling
Strength - Everyone needed already there (quick and easy)
Weakness - Unrepresentative (only students there at the time)
Data collection
method
Self report - questionnaire
Strength - Self report questionnaires - easy to administer and are cheap - broad amount of data in a short time
Weakness - Social desirability bias - go for the answers that seem more morally acceptable
Data
collected
Quantative
Weakness - results can't be generalised to a single statistic, complex human behaviour can't be reduced to a statistic or numerical value
Strength- easier to understand and interpret, easier to implement the research (surveys)
Snapshot study
Weakness - Doesn't account for how the results change overtime - can't say something that was relevant then would be relevant at a later time
Strength - Easy to replicate, over quickly, make conclusions quickly, requires less funding, doesn't take much time/effort
