Terrestrial, Aquatic, and Detrital Food Web
- Terrestrial: When energy mainly comes from plants that use sunlight and the energy is less efficient
- Aquatic: When energy comes from sunlight but energy transfer is more efficient, sometimes creating more trophic levels and inverted biomass pyramid, where predators have more biomass and producers
- Detrital: rely on dead organic matter as their energy source w/ decomposers breaking it down and recycling the nutrients back into the ecosystem
Ecosystem Disturbances
Major changes that disrupt the ecosystems affecting species and functions. Wildfires, agriculture, and pollution; but also human induced deforestation, pollution, and agriculture
Ecological Succession
Natural process of change in biotic communities overtime as species modify their environment, making it suitable for new organisms while less favorable for existing ones
Different types of successions:
- Primary Succession
- Secondary Succession
- Aquatic Succession
Biomes most productive
- Tropical Rain Forests
- Swamps & Marshes
Tipping Point
Small change that leads to major, often irreversible shift in the ecosystem's state or function
-
Net Primary Productivity
Show's how organic matter produces (like plants) create after using some of the energy for themselves
-
-
Biodiversity
richness of species, including genetic diversity, species variety, and the range of ecosystems
