Role of government
-
environmental protection
Why is it important?- it is important because environment and Climate Change Canada informs Canadians about protecting and conserving our natural heritage, and ensuring a clean, safe and sustainable environment for present and future generations.
what's an example of environmental regulation on business?- An example would be forestry companies usually harvest trees from public or ‘crown’ land.
After they clear the trees off the land they must pay to have the land re-planted with trees to ensure the sustainability of our forests.
Promoting environment
Example-De Beers Consolidated Mines once controlled a majority of the market for diamonds.
They gained control by pricing out their competitors and once they had control they could control the price of diamonds.
Why they're bad: -They cut out competition, if a company has a monopoly the can set the price to whatever they want, less incentive to create a better quality product (no competition)
What is a monopoly?-A monopoly is when a company or group has complete control over the supply of a product or service
Part 2
Labour laws
why are they important?-These labour laws are important because they protect employer and worker rights, they conduct work places inspections
-
crown corporations
what are some examples?-The CBC is one such example. It is completely government funded and creates 100% Canadian content.
What are crown corporations, and why do they exist?-Crown Corporations are usually created to fulfil a need that would not make any profit for a private company.
Some crown corporations exist to promote Canadian culture and identity.
prevent price fixing
what is price fixing? (example)-Price is when several similar companies agree to inflate the price of their goods or services to increase profits.
An example of this would be if shell, esso, and petro-canada agreed to increase their fuel prices by the same amount to make more profit.
What act protects consumers from companies price-fixing?-It is enforced under the Competition Act which serves to promote competition and ensure the best prices for consumers.
-
what is the role of health Canada?-Health Canada sets safety regulations for companies that produce goods for human consumption.
What is the role of CSA?-The roles of companies like the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) ensure that products meet industry standards for safety.
Product recall-If a product passes all safety tests it is usually trusted in the market, however, the government agencies responsible for consumer safety cannot oversee all production.
