Key Words
Replacement rate - The number of children each couple has to have to maintain the country’s population. The replacement is about 2.1 (this covers people who do not have children or those children that die in infancy).

Population Pyramid - This is a type of graph that shows the age and sex structure of the country. It is divided into males and females and then age groups.
Natural Increase - The difference between birth rate and death rate. A positive natural increase means more people were born than died. A negative natural increase means more people died than were born.

Carrying Capacity - The amount of people that the resources of a country can support. The carrying capacity can change with improvements in technology, e.g. desalination, discoveries of new resources, or the loss of existing resources (volcanic eruption destroying farm land).
Refugee - A person who leaves their country of origin in fear of their lives. They run away often with no idea where they will end up and with no permission to stay in another country.
Asylum Seeker - A person who leaves their country of origin for fear of persecution. They have asked for permission to stay in another country and are awaiting a decision on this.
Optimum Population - When population and resources are perfectly matched. In reality this is almost impossible to achieve.
