How learners develop phonemic awareness
1.gradually the infant associates meaning with the sounds and begins recognizing words such as up, bottle, daddy, mommy etc
the child repeats these meaningful sounds, which prompts positive responses
the child learns the alphabet and starts to learn that each letter has a name and begins separating the stream of sounds into those names.
What is phonemic awareness?
the growing awareness of sounds and the understanding that words are made up of discreet sounds
the ability to hear and isolate sounds in words
phonemic awareness is critical for both decoding and encoding
decoding is required for reading, and involves looking at a print symbol and associating it with a sound
encoding is required for writing, and involves hearing sounds, symbols or letters to write to represent that sound
