Words That Matter
Tier 2 Words
Tier 2 words are words that help students understand questions, and directions, and participate in discussions that apply across various subject areas.
These are frequently used academic words found across different subjects
Examples: compare, contrast, analyze, summarize, synthesize
Vocabulary Essentials
This is looking at the central ideas, themes, or processes students will need to understand in your classroom.
For example, in a Social Studies unit on the constitution, terms like “separation of powers,” “amendment,” “Bill of Rights,” “civil liberties,” and “popular sovereignty,” are critical because they represent the core concepts of the topic.
Tier 3 Words
These are words that are content-specific, or crucial to understanding subject matter. They occur frequently in the curriculum and are important in the unit.
Example: The word "factor" in math, "photosynthesis" in biology, and "thesis" in language arts.
Working With Colleagues
It is important to work with and communicate with your colleagues at school to discuss and identify common issues with vocabulary words or phrases.
