Crash Course on Vocabulary
WORLD OF WORDS
Brother Chandler struggled to learn Portuguese while living in Brasil for 2 years. The struggles he found he had there are struggles we see in supporting learners in education.
TRIED AND TRUE STRATEGIES
Have explicit vocabulary instruction so that it is clear and student friendly
Use word learning strategies such as using context clues and word parts to find the definition of new terms
Utilize Marzano's six step process
Include vocabulary in daily reading, writing, games, etc. so the concepts stick
Have students interact with peers such as in discussions and think-pair-share so the vocab terms stick
WHICH WORDS MATTER MOST?
Identify tier 2 and 3 words. Tier 2 words are used across various subjects and are academic words (ex: summarize, compare, etc). Tier 3 words are content specific (factor, photosynthesis, etc). Look at essential vocab words in your content and make plans to support students to learn them.
WORKING WITH COLLEAGUES
Analyze the materials and text to know the crucial vocabulary
Focus on words that help with the future learning
Identify words with multiple meanings that are used across multiple subjects (root used in language arts vs science)
Learn about students background knowledge especially when it comes to multi language learners and teach key terms in advanced.
Review standards and curriculum to figure out what terms cause the most trouble.
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER
Focusing on Tier 2 and Tier 3 word, collaborating with colleagues, and using research-based strategies like explicit teaching and technology-enhanced practice can help the teacher's students navigate complex language.
Strong vocabulary skills empower students to engage with content, express their ideas clearly, and make connections across subjects.
Effective vocabulary instruction is essential for student success.
TAP INTO TECHNOLOGY
Technology can help students learn vocab better. Consider using tools such as Brainscape, Quizlet, bitsboard, flippity, GoConquer, wordwall, google slides, or blooket to aide in vocab instruction. Images and multimedia are useful in vocab retention.
It is important to work with other teachers that are in your content area to know what things to teach and what crucial items that will be encountered regularly
