- - - - This occurs when there is an error in cell division during the formation of reproductive cells (eggs or sperm), called nondisjunction.
      - Instead of splitting properly, a reproductive cell ends up with an extra copy of chromosome 21.
      - When this egg or sperm combines with a normal reproductive cell from the other parent, the baby ends up with three copies of chromosome 21 in all of their cells, instead of two.
