Chap. 7 Value, Use, and Restoration of Ecosystems
-
Natural Resource- A feature of natural ecosystems and species that are of economic value; renewable v. nonrenewable
Consumptive-harvest food, shelter, tools, fuel, and clothing
-
-
-
Preservation- ensure that ecosystems aren't entirely depleted, regardless of economic value
Maximum Sustainable Yield- highest possible rate of use a system can match w own rate of maintenance; can apply to parks, air/water quaility and soils
-
Precautionary Principle- a risk management approach that suggests taking preventive action when there's a potential for harm to the public or the environment, even if scientific evidence of the risk is incomplete or uncertain.
Common-pool resources- Tragedy of the Commons; individuals share a common resource and it leads to depeletion of the resource

Marine and Forest systems are the most under pressure. Including connecting areas like bays or swamps
The forests are the most under attack from deforestation and logging; mostly converted into pastures
Sustainable forest management- forests managed as ecosystems, maintain biodiversity
Consequences of deforestation 1. productivty is reduced 2. reduction in biomass 3. biodiversity reduced 4. eroison increased 5.hydrology altered 6. CO2 is relased back into the atmosphere
Marine fisheries- bottom trawling- giant net for mass fishing that takes anything that can fit inside the holes of the net. Comparable to clear cutting in forests.

-
Ocean ecosystems- coral reefs are being bleached due to global warming. when corals become stressed thy expel their symbiotic alage. turning them white.
Protection and Restoration- 1. wilderness- gets the most protection 2. national parks- 2nd most protection 3. national forests- third greatest 4. non-federal land
Majority of federally protected lands are out west because of the timing of the formation of the parks and also a lot more barren undevolped landscapes
