Technology
In Education
Benefits
Allows for individualised/ tailored learning: Students can learn at the comfort of their own pace, increasing inclusivity and productivity + AI can provide curated timetables for students to follow based on their schedule + marginalised students are less likely to fall further behind and be more empowered
Students can learn anywhere and anytime/ convenient: Students need not be seated in front of a table with a teacher around
Enahances student engagement: Multimeda and interactive technology makes learning more interesting and diverse (e.g. gamification) + support different learning styles
Variety of sources to get reference and help from: Offers learners multiple avenues to explore and expand their knowledge
Cultivates problem-solving skills and critical thinking: Students have to navigate through the various technological features
-
Allows for collaborative learning: Students are able to interact regardless of their physical proximity
Drawbacks
Over-reliance leads hindered critical-thinking and problem solving skills + traditional skills (e.g. note-taking)
-
-
High accessibility also means children have a high chance of being exposed to explicit/ inappropriate content
May cause teachers to be increasingly obsolete, leading to retrenchment
Lack of human interactions and social skills: online learning platforms may not provide the same opportunities for collaboration and social interaction (face-to-face interactions) as traditional classrooms.
Cyber-security threats
E.g. Students in Singapore experienced the service disruption of the Mobile Guardian app, with 13,000 students from 26 secondary schools affected by a cyber-security breach.
Distraction and loss of focus: students easily sidetracked by social media, games, or non-educational content.
Health issues: Excessive screen time + lack of physical activity due to spending too much time on technology
Exacerabte inequalities in terms of digital divide: Not all students have equal access to technology + reliabel internet connections -> some people lack behind
In Healthcare
Benefits
Enhanced quality of patient care: Allows for personalised treatments + reduced medical errors due to higher accuracy(-> reduces costs)
Innovations in treatment and diagnosis: Allows for proactive management of chronic conditions and timely interventions.
E.g. Wearable fitness trackers can track health data (heart rate, sleep patterns) and promote preventive care measures by reminding patients to take medications or complete exercises.
Empower patients: Technology can empower patients to take a more active role in their health management.
E.g. Patient portals like MyChart provide secure access to medical records and healthcare data, allowing patients to view test results and medication information and communicate with their healthcare providers directly through a messaging system.
Drawbacks
Unintentional Exposure of Sensitive Information: There's a risk of accidental or unauthorized access to patient information, potentially leading to privacy violations.
Reduced human interactions: Over-reliance on technology can lead to decreases face-to-face interactions --> technology may struggle to replicate the empathy and personalized care that human healthcare providers offer --> feel disconnected from their care team or feel that their needs are not being met when technology is used excessively.
In Communication
Benefits
Enables instantaneous communication regardless of geographical distance: Enable people to keep in touch with loved ones in another country/ far away
E.g. tools like email, instant messaging, and video calls
Facilitates global communication/connectivity: Technology allows individuals and businesses to connect and communicate with people across the globe to exchange ideas, breaking down geographical barriers + blending of cultures
Provides accessibility for people with disabilities: ensure that everyone can participate in conversations.
E.g. features like voice-to-text, screen readers, and captioning in video calls
Diverse communication channels increases accessibility: Wide range of communication channels to cater to different preferences and needs.
E.g. email, social media, video conferencing
Cost-effective: Video conferencing and other technologies reduce the need for travel, saving time and money.
Enhanced Collaboration: Technology enables remote work and streamlines communication channels, allowing employees to work from anywhere in the world while also enhancing information sharing so that everyone is on the same page.
Demerits
Vulnerable to hacking and data breaches: Can potentially expose sensitive personal information, leading to potential financial and reputational damage.
Reduced personal interactions: Can lead to a decline in face-to-face interactions and potentially contribute to social isolation.
Information overload: Constant notifications and the allure of social media can lead to distractions and reduced focus during communication.
Over-reliance on technology for communication: Can lead to dependence and a decline in essential human skills like face-to-face communication and problem-solving.
Online harassment: Keyboard warriers can turn to online platforms to harass/ cyberbully and get away with it, creating a hostile environment.
In transportation
Benefits
Enhanced safety
E.g. Self-driving cars and trucks have the potential to eliminate human error, a major cause of accidents, and improve overall road safety OR development of heavy-duty electric trucks, which are beginning to replace traditional diesel trucks for logistics, significantly reducing carbon emissions and fuel costs.
E.g. AI and machine learning can analyze traffic patterns and weather conditions to predict potential hazards and alert drivers or authorities.
More substainable transportation: Sustainable transportation technologies can significantly reduce emissions and improve air quality.
E.g. the adoption of Electric vehicles (EVs) halves our carbon footprint, compared to driving a similar car powered by an internal combustion engine. Electric vehicles (EVs) are also less pollutive and quieter, creating a more pleasant living environment.
