How did the American Revolution impact the creation of the U.S. Constitution?
Causes
at first, Great Britain rarely interfered with North America even though they were colonizing them due to vast ocean between them. North America had most control over their own selves until suddenly Britain became more strict and enforced more laws and taxes. Due to this sudden shift it caused mass frustration leading to the American Revolution
There was taxation without representation. American colonists recieved consistent taxation however they were denied of representation. They had to fight in war and pay the same taxes as Englishmen yet weren’t given the same rights as them. The Magna Carta supported their point. There were many protests due to this which lead to being of the main causes of the revolution
Due to taxation without representation, the Boston tea party event happened. In 1773, Britain passed the Tea Act which allowed East India companies to sell their tea in these colonies with a lower price however still with tax, and unfair tax. People in Boston wanted the tea shipments to be sent back but Britain refused unless they paid the tax. Because of this, around a hundred men boarded ships and dumped thousands of pounds of tea worth around a million dollars today. Britain passed the Intolerable Acts after this which punished many people which broke out many fights leading to the revolution.
there was tension between the British soldiers and citizens of Boston and so during a protest, a fight escalated leading to British soldiers killing many citizens. The Sons of Liberty used this to further prove their anti-British sentiment. The Boston Massacre united colonists together which helped in the revolution.
What features of the constitution were influenced because of the revolution?
•Popular Sovereignty: The revolution revolved around the strict rules of the British and how colonists had no representation in the parliament. The constitution explains how authority comes from the citizens and how they’re able to elect and choose their own representatives.
Limited power: back then, there was a powerful central government which was the British monarchy which lead to the constitution limiting government power and letting the people have a say in laws. We can see this through the separation of powers between Legislative, executive, and judicial branches as well as checks and balances.
Bill of rights: The revolution lead to the bill of rights which helped people have freedom. Different freedoms like freedom of speech, religion, press, fair trial and more are all found in different amendments throughout the constitution.
Federalism: Because of the revolution, states wanted to be able to self-rule. They didn’t want a strong central government and so, the constitution explains how states keep their power and can make their own laws.
Representation: Colonists were frustrated with how the British parliament made laws without their input and because of that, the constitution now ensures that there is fair representation when it comes to law and decision making.
Before the constitution there was the Articles of Confederation which was later replaced. It was replaced due to its weaknesses and how the constitution was more effective due to it having major influences from the revolution.
