The Modern Olympics (1892)
In 1892, Pierre de Coubertin from France suggested restarting the Olympic Games.
The first modern Olympics took place in Athens, Greece in 1896.
Location: Paris, France (idea proposed by Pierre de Coubertin).
Participants: 13 countries, only male athletes, 43 events.
Modern Olympics (2016 Rio)
Location: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In 2016, the Olympics grew significantly with over 11,000 athletes competing in more than 300 events.
About 45% of athletes were women, and the US team had more women athletes (292) than men (263).
Global Event
The Olympics are now held every four years in a different country.
