Two-system process - (Kahneman, 2003; Evans, 2008):
- System 1 - automatic, implicit, fast, effortless and emotional - intuitive and immediate responses
-> Relatively old in evolutionary terms
- System 2 - evolutionarily recent, specific to humans, involves abstract thinking, hypothetical thinking, slow thinking and sequentially, unemotional, limited by working memory capacity, correlated to fluid intelligence
- These systems interact and System 2 can inhibit and override System 1 where appropriate
- System 1 processes also influence what information the person attends to and focuses on, and what information System 2 works with (Evans, 2008)

Summary
The normative approach -
- Weighing up our options and calculating the most rational decision
- Decisions that deviate from the norm must be irrational
Heuristic approach -
- Using mental shortcuts to fill in the information
- Cognitive biases - shortcuts that can lead us astray
How emotions affect decisions -
- Our mood can change how we judge risk - bad moods leads to priming negative behaviour
- Emotions can be informative cues - learn by subconscious association
How do we make decisions in naturalistic settings -
- Many studies are flawed by the laboratory settings
- How is decision making influenced by context?
