POSSIBILITY
We use modals of possibility to talk about how likely something is to happen or be true. Possibility can be strong (high chance) or weak (low chance).
-
-
PERMISSION
We use modals of permission to ask for permission (asking if something is allowed) or to give permission (saying that something is allowed).
-
-
OBLIGATION
Obligation modals express things we must or should do, implying that something is necessary or required.
-
-
LACK OF OBLIGATION
We use lack of obligation modals to show that something is not necessary to do, meaning you’re not required to do it.
