Poems
I felt a Funeral, in my Brain
This poem focuses on Dickson's exploration of death. In this poem Dickson explores the idea that death comes in wave and that the brain is the last thing to go
This idea presents an scary reality where a person who is believed to be dead could have to experience their own funeral from inside the coffin
-
through the poem it is shown many times that the speaker of this poem is the person inside the coffin, while their body is dead the brain is stuck in their body
the poem opens with the speaker talking about the funeral and how they can hear the mourners, "And mourners to and fro/ kept treading - treading
the speaker then goes on to talk about the feeling inside the coffin as it was lifted by the pall-bearers, the speaker says it felt as if they were trampling on her soul with their "boots if lead", as the coffin is being moved the speaker is shaken around inside it, "then space - began to toll"
As the speaker begins to feel the loneliness of this situation they describe it as if the silence and the speaker are trapped together forever in this moment "And I, and silence, some strange Race/ Wrenched, solitary, here"
The final stanza of the poem brings us to the speakers grave, the speaker is drop down into the grave, as the speaker hits the ground, they cant explain the feeling they have so the sudden ending or the speakers brain was finally taken not letting them finish their poem
