After First World War, the world economy experienced a boom. Britain started a house-building program, and public health improved.
However, the 1929 Wall Street Crash led to widespread bank failures in Europe.

The Difficult 1930s
From 1935, Prime Minister Baldwin led a Conservative government.
A major crisis arose when King Edward VIII, who had succeeded George V, wanted to marry twice-divorced American Wallis Simpson.
Baldwin forced his abdication, leading to George VI taking the throne in 1936.
