tsarist russia
at the beginning of the 20th century
russian empire had around 150 million inhabitants
the population
was very unevanly distributed
and consisted of a great diversity of

was slowly developing industrially

poverty was widespread
autocratic monarchy
the tsar exercised his power
established by divine right
absolute ruler
the sovereign was backed by a feudal aristocracy
the orthodox church
a corrupt bureaucracy
political oppositions to tsarim
they grew in russia
this opposition was tied to cultural elite
was based on the liberal european tradition
at the end of the 19th century
the Marxist-inspired RSDWP was also founded
this party felt that the working class should carry on a revolution to eliminate
injustices
unecuality
Russian Social-Democratic Workers' Party
in 1903 split into two groups
bolsheviks
defended the seizure of power by committed working-klas minority
their leaader was Vladimir Lenin
mensheviks
were more moderate and favoured an aliance with reformist liberalism
their leader was Julius Martov
rasputin
rasputin was a mystic called to the palace to cure the tsar's eldest son Alexis
after that he had a very big religious influence on the tsarina
he was accused of manipulating the appointment of goverment positions
of bigin a german spy
and of influencing the tsarian in favor of the germans
as he was of german ancestry
he was assassinated in 1916
