The Xiao also known as the dongxiao, is an ancient Chinese wind instrument. It is currently divided into southern xiao and northern Xiao. The southern Xiao is relatively thick and short, and the sound is rounder and thicker; the northern Xiao, also known as the qinxiao, is relatively slender, usually played with the guqin, and has a gentler tone. Generally speaking, the sound of the Xiao is soft, quiet and elegant, and is often used for solo, qin and Xiao ensemble or string and bamboo music performance.
