3-ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES
THE TERTIARY SECTOR IN SPAIN
The tertiary sector is also called the service sector.
Services
do not provide us with material goods.Instead, they
offer us such things as trade, health, education, tourism and transport.
SERVICES
TRADE
Trade is the buying and selling of products, for example, when shopkeepers sell products to customers.

Domestic trade
means buying and selling products within a country. It includes products we buy in shops and supermarkets.
•
Foreign trade
means buying and selling products to and from other countries.
Imports
are products which
we buy from other countries.
Exports are products which we sell to other countries.
Spain buys, or imports, more products than it exports
. The main imports are petrol, heavy machinery, electrical appliances, car components and telecommunications products.
The main exports are cars, fruit and vegetables, medicines and electrical goods.
HEALTH AND EDUCATION
Health services are provided in hospitals, clinics and health centres. In Euskadi, Osakidetza.
Most of these services are public and are run by the government through the Social Security System.
Education services consist of primary, secondary and university education.
The government provides free, compulsory education in primary and secondary schools.
Private schools also provide primary and secondary education.
TRANSPORT
Transport is another important service.
We need transport to go from one town to another. Foreign tourists and business people also use transport services when they visit Spain.
Transport is also essential for moving merchandise. Raw materials are taken to factories. Products from farming and industry are taken to consumers.
Passengers and merchandise travel by road, rail, sea and air.
Tourism is very important for Spain. It leads to the creation of many jobs in construction, as well as in hotels and restaurants.
Spain is a very popular tourist destination.
Most tourists visit Spain in summer to enjoy the beaches and the sunny climate.
There has been an increase in cultural tourism; people come to visit cities such as Granada, Barcelona, Bilbao and Madrid, to see their monuments.
OTHER SERVICES
Other services, such as legal services, telecommunications and electricity, are provided by private companies.
Public services. Services such as rubbish collection and street lighting are provided by the government or the local council.
• Financial services. Banks provide financial services.
