Formed in Shanghai in 1921 -> Mao Zedong, one of its founding members
Mao, a peasant from Hunan province -> influenced by Russian Revolution of 1917 -> and deeply believed in Marxism as the way to provide regeneration for China
The United Front
The GMD and the CCP had the common goal of defeating all of China's external and internal enemies, such as warlordism

Over next 3 years - proved effective, and by 1927, warlordism had been mostly overcome
The White Terror
As warlordism had been defeated, leader of the GMD, Chiang Kai-shek, moved onto his goal of eradicating Communism
He had gone to the USSR in early 1920s, to be trained a a revolutionary, but his experience there made him despise Marxism

The Long March

The escape from Jiangxi to Yanan, after the GMD had placed extreme pressure on the CCP's main base in Yanan
Became viewed as a Communist legend -> portrayed as a 6000 mile triumphant journey embarked by those who wished to restore China
