Throwing objects at others
When?
Any time during free-choice activities, structured activities, and early or late days.
Ex: a child throwing objects during transition between activities.
Why?
Being told "no" (react to rejection).
Argument (disagreement with peers).
Non-sharing (when the other child refuses sharing toys).
Ex: children throw toys because peers refuse to share.
Anger (when children feel upset or frustration)
Who?
Anyone (aggressive behavior toward any child).
Confidince and timid child (both can be involved)
Same child (repeative behavior from the same individual).
Ex: a confident child throw toys toward timid child.
What?
any type of objects (large/small, soft/hard, sharp)
Ex: a child throw buzzle or blocks or toys .
Dealing with it:
consider the implication
Ex: scolding might give attention, which reinforces the negative behavior.
Throwing often has strong reactions from adults, which may reinforce the behavior.
Alternative and strategies
Remove specific objects (remove the problematic object and turn it back later).
Seprate the children (if a specific child is targeted, then seprate them).
Legtimate throwing activities (allow throwing in a controlled environment).
Ex: throwing balls game.
Family counslation
Brainstrom consistent approach.
Understanding the children's environment and triggets.
Gathering information and discussing the strategies with the family.
Ex: Discuss whether the same behavior occurs at home.
