Changing Matter
Chemical Change
Defintion
Takes place when atoms of chemical substances break apart and join or rearrange to form new substances
-
Observations
A change in colour
-
However, some physical changes will give rise to colour change as well
Hence, further test is needed to confirm if a chemical reaction has occurred
-
Formation of a gas
Bubbles, smoke, odour, fumes

Causes
Heat
Combustion
Definition
A chemical reaction when a substance burns and reacts with oxygen in air to release a large amount of heat and light
-
Importance
Burning of fuels such as petrol, natural gas and coal provides more than 90% of energy needed for transport, industries and homes
-

-
Electricity
Definition
In electrolysis, electricity is used to break down a substance into simpler substances
-
Physical Change
-
Characteristics
Some physical changes involve a heat change, while others do not
Expansion and Contraction of a substance and changes in physical state require heat gain or heat loss
-
-
-
Processes
Melting
-
-
-
Process
-
At the melting point, the particles gain enough heat energy to break the attractive forces that hold them in their fixed positions
-
-
Boiling
-
-
-
Process
-
At the boiling point, the particles gain enough heat energy to overcome the attractive forces that hold them in confined space
Allows the particles to move freely, randomly at high speeds in all directions and far apart from one another
-
Condensation
-
-
-
Process
-
At the condensation point, the particles lose enough heat energy to allow the attractive forces to be formed between them to hold them together
-
-
Freezing
-
-
-
Process
-
At the freezing point, the particles lose enough heat energy to allow the attractive forces to be formed between them to hold them together

Global Warming
-
Greenhouse Gases
Main greenhouse gases are water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane
-
-
Causes of Global Warming
The radiation from the Sun reaches the Earth's surface and is reflected back to space from the surface of the Earth.
Some radiation is reflected back to the Earth's surface by the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and warms up the Earth's surface to make life possible.
-
When excessive greenhouse gases are emitted to the atmosphere, they reflect more radiation back to the Earth's surface.
The excessive radiation trapped in the atmosphere causes the Earth's average surface temperature to rise.

Air Pollution
Definition
Presence of unwanted substances in the atmosphere that can cause harm to living things and damage to the natural environment
