Rodriguez-Diaz: Health is Political
politics and health
health is political because, under a neoliberal economic system, some groups like latinx people in the US, have fewer economic and social resources
safe housing, quality education, and a livable wage
power used to shape economic, social and political systems—systems that influence health
change requires political awareness and struggle
central in health or latinx persons in the US is marginalization as a minority group, limited access to political power, class and status
limited access of political power is systemically reinforced by class and status
freedom, mobility, migration, and citizenship constantly challenged
health disparities
health disparity: a particular type of health difference that is closely linked with social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage
health like most critical issues is political
health inequity: the unnecessary, avoidable, unjust, and unfair distribution of health determinants
health equity: refers to the attatinment of highest level of health for all people
regardless of all these definitions, they are not well operationalized-- also no focus on solutions
structural-level intervention is needed to reduce disparities
requires intense political willand longterm commitment
health is infleunced by ideologies, those with power can infleunce how health is prioritized, defined, measured, and experienced
attention to the SDOH
the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, play, live and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life
factors can be divided intp interpersonal, intrapersonal, and institutional, community and policy levels
solutions still underdeveloped
the non-randomness of mortality and morbidity is resolvable; it is a multidisciplinary issue, both scientific and also political
3 key reccomendations:
improve daily living cinditions
tackle inequitable distribution of power, money and resources
measure and understand the problem and assess the impact of action
in order to improve the health of latinx persons, political will and commitment is necessary; we all must become political agents
power within us
leardership is esstential
political agency: the capacity to effect social change
Discrimination, racism, and xenophobia must be acknowledged and how they intersect to impact health
three strategies: health advocacy, community mobilization, and community-based participatory research
cannot be discreet- health in all policies must be visible and explicit at all times
3 strategies
health advocacy
taking positions to support or provide recommendations to promote health
advocacy critical to over come major barriers
2 main goals: protection of vulnerable populations and empowerment of disadvantaged populations
community mobilization
Important for latinx community bc they are so diverse and do not necessarily share political or health priorities.
Involves key stakeholders, community leaders, community members, and others can be affected by the issue being addressed
Social media is an emerging initiative to provide info and to organize and mobilize
requires string and charismatic and involvement of critical stateholders
community-based participatory research
a partnership approach to research that equitably involves community members, organization representatives, and researchers in all aspects or the reserach process
elucidates health issues of importance to diverse latinx populations but also propels structural interventions in the form of policy and changes to the built environment
can be complicated and takes time—but extremely impactful when done
