Agriculture
Rural agricultural areas contained most communist support 'peasant party' - however most were illiterate and did not understand Marxist thought, they wanted to escape poverty and not be exploited
To gain their support, Mao promised land reform
- Party cadres went to countryside and encourged peasants to 'rise up' against oppressive landlords who were then beaten and humiliated and forced to sign a confession
- their land was then divided up between the peasants
- huge source of support for communists
Agricultural tools and livestock in short supply, human poo as fertaliser
Many peasants had been forcibily conscripted into Nationalist forces which meant farms had been left unattended - crops die, low food supply
Industry
Damaged by war and industrial equipment destroyed, power stations bombed - saboutaged by Nationalist forces

end of WW2 - soviet union dismantled industrial equipment, confiscated tools, tool back steel mines in their territory

communication difficult due to different languages, dialects
transport networks badly damaged - CCP war tactic had involved blowing up railway tracks and bridges
