Oral Presentation
Designing Effective Slides
Think graphically
Readers prefer visuals rather then long text heavy slides
Make slides look attractive and keep them simple
Color and design are important avoid bright color and nonstandard colors
Pay attention to font and limit the amount of text
about 5 words per bullet point and about 5 bullet point per slide
Give figures and table a title but do not clutter them
Delivering a Face to Face talk
Dress appropriately and arrive early
Stick to the time limit and speak slow
Speak load to ensure everyone can hear you
Avoid sounds like "hm", "uh", "ok","so" to avoid appearing unsure or unprepared
Face audience and maintain eye contact
Format of a Scientific talk
Organize your talk
First slide: Overview of talk
Next slide: Introduction/Background and purpose of study
Subsequences slide: Conclusion and main supporting points
Credit slide (Optional): Acknowledgment of those who worked with you or financed your research
Identify the purpose/question and the take-home message of the study
Pick important figures for core slide
Prepare an overview slide for longer presentation
Preparing for a talk
Prepare your talk and visual aids ahead of time
Prepare notes in large print, and memorize the opening sentences
Write notes in outline form not full sentences
