Polymer Processes
Vacuum Forming
-
Products - lightweight trays, box inserts and liners, takeaway coffee cups and yoghurt pots.
moulds are relatively easy to make, but need a draft angle, air holes and rounded corners.
-
-
- Mould is placed on bed of machine-platen-which is lowered to bottom of machine
2.Polymer sheet is clamped over mould and heater is pulled over polymer sheet
- When sheet has softened, platen is raised into polymer and heat is removed
- Vacuum pump is switched on, which sucks polymer onto mould
- Once polymer has cooled and returned to solidified state, platen is lowered and vacuum switched off
- Mould is removed from moulding, excess polymer is trimmed off
Thermoforming
-
-
Products - Bath, food packaging
Like vacuum forming, except an additional mould is pressed onto surface of polymer sheet at the same time vacuum is applied
-
slow process, used in industrial production
Calendering
-
-
-
Industrial production method, carried out by specialist manufactures
