        God wanted them to spread throughout the world
        
        This attitude, superior way of life, came to be known as 'Jingoism'.

        obedience to a strict code of morality;
        
        dedication to humanitarian causes and social reform.

        John Henry Newman and they respond to the challenge by returning to ancient doctrines and rituals
    - - It was founded by Jeremy Bentham and they believed that every action is morally right if it leads to happiness, wrong if it leads to unhappiness (like epicurism)
      - about the government they think that there isn't a social contract (natural law) but a utilitarian need to collectively promote happiness, the pleasure of all
    - - John Stuart Mill was an empiricist and he finds the principles of utilitarism are inadequate for the time. He thinks that:
        
        happiness is a state of mind and spirit;
        
        the legislation should help men develop their natural talents;
        
        art is of great importance in education.
